Support and empower women in the coffee community with Café Andreia!
It’s International Women’s Day! International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the historical, cultural, and political achievements of women. We are celebrating women everywhere today, especially those in the coffee community! The impact of women in the coffee industry has always been felt and understood, so we want to shout it from the rooftops. So, sit back, relax, brew a cup of Velo, and let us tell you about Olam and their special project to help celebrate women in the coffee industry.
Olam Specialty Coffee started the Café Delas project in March of 2015. Café Delas was born from the “Coffee Flowers” program designed to promote equality for women in the coffee industry in Brazil, with the idea that when women in agriculture are empowered, livelihoods improve! It was when Olam was managing “Coffee Flowers”, they realised a greater commitment was needed for this project, and behold, Café Delas was born!
Café Delas was created to help women farmers access the resources, knowledge, and voice they need to grow and succeed in their operations. If women are given better access to resources and given an equal voice in leadership, women will do so much more than produce specialty coffee. With the right resources, women will create positive and lasting impacts in their communities.
Olam has included five metrics from the Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index that are dedicated to women and coffee that are geared towards the success of Café Delas: production, income, resources, leadership, and time. At Velo, we are so happy and proud to work with a woman and her family’s coffee farm who are a part of the Café Delas program: Andreia Ribeiro Tartari.
"If we're going to improve livelihood in Agriculture, we need to empower women.” Andreia Ribeiro Tartari manages her family’s coffee farm in Aragão, which is a small community in the Cerrado region of Brazil. Andreia’s family has been in the coffee-growing business for generations, passing down from great-grandmother, to great-grandson.
Andreia and her family’s goal is to produce quality coffee that meets consumer’s expectations, while taking care of the environment and the well-being of the coffee farm’s employees. Through the Cafe Delas coffee project, Andreia is discovering new coffee processes and post-harvest activities to make a top gear coffee!
Let’s all raise our coffee cups to empowering women in agriculture with Café Delas coffees, such as Café Andreia! Happy International Women’s Day!
