Happy National Irish Coffee Day! On January 25th, we celebrate (responsibly, of course!) This is the perfect occasion to warm yourself up with your favourite Velo coffee, and add a little twist to it! Do you know the story of how Irish Coffee came to be? It was created by chef Joe Sheridan at Foynes Port near Limerick! The village was an airbase for transatlantic flights.

One day after a flight had to turn around and return to Foynes. Joe whipped up something to help the passengers forget about the cold and their disappointment. Everyone drank their drinks in total silence, savouring the taste. One person asked Joe if they were drinking Brazilian coffee, to which he replied “No, that’s Irish Coffee.”

Try it for yourself!

Classic Irish Coffee

  • 50 ml Irish whiskey
  • 1 tsp. of brown sugar
  • 100 ml of freshly brewed Velo coffee
  • 2-3 table spoons of cream

Step 1: Fill glass with hot water, this heats the glass and ensures your Irish coffee stays hot – make sure a metal spoons is in the glass before pouring water as it’ll prevent it from cracking.

Step 2: Brew your coffee now – so it has time to sit and absorb all the delicious flavours while you carry out the next few steps. We recommend using our delicious El Salvador Fincas Las Mercedes which has a nutty and chocolate flavour that compliments whiskey beautifully.

Step 3: Pour the hot water out of the glass and pour in 50 ml of Irish whiskey.

Step 4: Add in 1 teaspoon of brown sugar to the whiskey and stir until all granules are dissolved.

Step 5: Pour in the freshly brewed coffee into the whiskey and sugar mixture, leaving just enough space in the glass for the cream.

Step 6: Carefully add cream to top it all off – to get the cream to sit on top of the coffee, place the spoon upside down with the tip of the spoon resting on top of the coffee. Carefully pour the cream over the back of the spoon until the top is covered. Bonus points if you use freshly whipped cream.

Step 7: Enjoy! .. Oh and don’t forget to share to social media and tag us to let us know!
