It has been an exciting year so far for the Cork-based Velo Coffee Roasters, culminating at the Blas na hÉireann awards in Dingle this past weekend. Three coffees were listed as finalists, and they were delighted to win a Bronze for their Aldi Tandem Specially Selected and Gold for their El Salvador Kenia Honey.
“It was fantastic to be back in Dingle at the Blas na hÉireann awards,” says owner Rob Horgan, “it is always a fun weekend and a great opportunity to celebrate with other food producers across the country.”
The Speciality Coffee roasters have won 19 awards in both Blas na hÉireann and Great Taste since 2018. This year they received a total of 7 Great Taste stars across their Velo BMX, Ethiopia Dumerso, Velo Yellow Jersey Blend, El Salvador Finca las Mercedes, and Specially Selected blend.
“The success we’ve seen year after year is a true testament to the team’s hard work and talent. We are all delighted to see which coffees have won, and they continue to give us confidence to continue to grow,” says Horgan.
There is more to Velo than producing multi award-winning coffee. As a member of Origin Green, Velo has recently attained Gold Membership alongside many notable and exemplary brands. Sustainability has always been at the core of the brand, but Origin Green has really helped Velo prioritise and focus on specific targets.
“It took dedication from the entire team to reach this standard,” says GM Suzanne Casey. “It was important to all of us to reach our targets and keep sustainability at the forefront.”
The Cork roastery continues to go from strength to strength, and this past weekend at Blas was the perfect example of that. Even as they grow, their focus is on maintaining quality. As always, bringing Speciality Coffee to their customers.
